Royalty Free Explained
I think people are often confused about what rights they actually do and do not have when purchasing licenses from sites like iStockPhoto.com. So, I was glad to see this email providing an explanation and was happy to share it with you! Now, here’s the short and sweet of it…
When you download a photo, illustration, video or audio track from iStockphoto, what you’ve actually done is license the rights to use that content. Some of the rights, that is. You haven’t actually purchased all the rights to that file.
When you purchase the rights to an iStock royalty-free file, you do not have to pay the artist a royalty each time you use the file in a way that’s allowed under that license. If you wish to use a royalty-free file beyond its standard license, say to re-sell a product for example, you will need an Extended License.

I have sold a lot of pictures on istockphoto and I know what you mean about people not understanding what rights they have and what royalty means. Thanks for helping us understand a little more about it and what it means. great blog here.
