Leveraging Your Assets from Your Business for Charitable Giving

Posted April 11th, 2008 by Melanie

Today I am happy to turn the spotlight on Maggie F. Keenan, Ed.D., Owner & Principal of givingadvice. She works with small businesses to create charitable giving strategies and community involvement programs that makes a difference for their bottom line and beyond. Read on to learn how you can leverage assets from your business for charitable giving

I work with business of all sizes, from corporations to solo-entrepreneurs. The common thing I hear often among small businesses is they don’t have a lot of money to give and the cash flow fluctuates depending on the quarterly sales or service. If this is you, you are not alone and the good thing is you can still give back to causes in other ways that still make a difference.

One of the things I suggest is assessing other assets you have for giving. Cash isn’t the only way and I always recommend that businesses leverage their assets for giving. We call these assets, your financial capital, knowledge capital and time capital. By planning a program that incorporates each of these assets you diversify your giving, enhance company image, make a difference in other ways, and you feel good at the same time. How to leverage these isn’t as easy as it seems and there really is a strategy so that any type of giving makes an impact for you and causes you care about most.

If you are simply writing checks I encourage you to think about other assets you do have to balance your giving. Now, some businesses should be heavier in the knowledge capital area, while others should be heavier with the giving of their time. No two companies should have the same formula for giving because every business is unique in its service, product, brand and culture.
